A key exam to detect a recent or past stroke
A CT brain scan – stroke protocol is a medical imaging exam used to quickly detect the presence of a stroke, whether ischemic (caused by a blocked blood vessel) or hemorrhagic (caused by bleeding). This exam uses computed tomography (CT scan) to produce detailed images of the brain in just a few minutes.
What is the purpose of this exam?
The main objectives of this type of CT scan are to:
- Confirm or rule out the presence of a stroke
- Determine whether the stroke is ischemic or hemorrhagic
- Rapidly guide medical intervention when urgent care is required
- Detect a past or silent stroke
- Monitor the progression of an already diagnosed stroke
- Investigate persistent symptoms such as memory loss or cognitive impairment
When is this exam ordered?
In emergency situations
The CT brain scan – stroke protocol is the first-line exam when a stroke is suspected in an emergency context. It is prescribed when the following symptoms appear suddenly:
- Weakness or numbness on one side of the body
- Difficulty speaking or understanding speech
- Vision loss
- Sudden and severe headaches
- Loss of balance or severe dizziness
In these situations, the scan enables rapid diagnosis and helps determine whether emergency treatment, such as thrombolysis or thrombectomy, is possible.
Non-urgent situations
Outside of emergency care, a CT brain scan – stroke protocol may be prescribed to:
- Perform a neurological assessment after past symptoms
- Look for signs of previous strokes or silent brain lesions
- Evaluate the effectiveness of a treatment or the progression of a neurological condition
- Investigate persistent symptoms such as:
- Dizziness
- Memory issues
- Confusion
- Behavioral or cognitive changes
