Radimed is pleased to announce the addition of a new service: body composition analysis using Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA). This examination provides precise measurements of body tissue distribution, including bone mineral density, lean mass, and fat mass.
Why assess your body composition?
Many people monitor their weight based solely on the scale. However, this number alone does not indicate the proportion of muscle mass, fat mass, and bone density. The DXA exam provides a more detailed evaluation of these parameters, which can be useful in various contexts:
- Weight management monitoring
- Assessment within a training program
- Monitoring certain medical conditions
- Bone health tracking
How does the DXA exam work?
Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) uses a low dose of X-rays to create a complete image of the body. Two energy levels are used to analyze how tissues (bones, muscles, fat) absorb X-rays. A software application then interprets these results.
Exam procedure
The exam is quick, painless, and non-invasive. Here’s what to expect during your visit:
- Before the exam, some information such as age, height, and weight will be entered into the system.
- You will need to wear a hospital gown, and any metal objects in the analyzed area must be removed.
- You will be asked to lie down on an examination table, and the operator will position your arms and legs for an optimal analysis.
- During the exam, which usually lasts less than 10 minutes, it is important to remain still and breathe normally.
Interpretation of results
Once the exam is complete, a report is generated indicating the distribution of different body masses (muscle, fat, bone) across various body regions (arms, legs, trunk, total) and is sent to your doctor. Bone mineral density can also be assessed, which is relevant for monitoring bone health. This data can be used by a healthcare professional to track the evolution of certain parameters over time.
Who can benefit from this exam?
DXA body composition analysis can be recommended in various contexts, including:
- Tracking a weight management program
- Assessing athletes or individuals engaged in regular physical activity
- Monitoring conditions such as anorexia or certain chronic diseases
- Tracking changes in muscle mass and fat mass
It is always advisable to consult a healthcare professional to determine if this exam is appropriate for your situation.
